My good friend called from the US and asked me if I knew a good Medellin dentist that spoke English. Seems he wanted to get a quote on having a couple of crowns done for him self.
I put him in touch with Dr. Juan Carlos Mejia. Within 2 days, my friend was making travel plans to come to Medellin to have the procedure done. He was quoted $4,500 by his dentist in the US. Juan Carlos did the crowns, and a cleaning for just over $1,500. That included a 20% expedite fee to get all the lab work completed in 3 days.
My friend used frequent flyer miles for his plane trip; stayed with me for free (of course); managed to spend about $80 on taxis including to and from the airport and multiple trips to and from the dentists office; and, maybe about $100 on food and beverages.
I would call that a worthwhile visit and he was back at work by Monday morning.

I too have been to see Juan 3 times now.
I spent over $2000 in 6 months in the Uk and it was such a bad job that i had it all re-done with Juan at a fraction of the cost. They have professional set up and far better trained than the Uk dentists. I've now had laser whitening done 3 times with him and 9 fillings, 2 route-canals (British teeth) lol.
I honestly wouldn't go anywhere else and my sister now wants to come to Medellin to get her teeth looked at, and she's very fussy!

I'm in Medellin at the moment and found myself in the position of needing some urgent root canal work done a few weeks ago, I couldn't find that much info on the net regarding other traveler’s opinions or experiences so thought I'd offer mine, for others who might find themselves needing a dentist here.
I chose the first clinic I could find online that referred to an English speaking dentist (didn't fancy any misunderstandings with this one!), and luckily it was only a ten minute taxi ride from the hostel in El Poblado. I was also lucky because it turned out to be an incredibly professionally run clinic, and from start to finish I felt totally confident with the service and work done. My root canal work was actually do to a less than perfect job done in England, which was quite clear from the before-and-after x-rays!
He took all the time I needed to explain (in English) my situation etc, and I have no doubt that you couldn't get better treatment anywhere. It turns out a lot of his patients are foreigners who come to Medellin/Colombia specifically for the high quality of treatment at the much cheaper cost than in the home countries, but I'm just glad I didn't have the problem when I was up in Central America! Although I did then decide to take advantage of that and replace some chipped and relatively poor veneers I had done a decade ago, and again I couldn't be happier with the results!

I flew down with my wife from New York in January 2009, we met Dr. Juan Carlos Mejia and his staff. The Doctor was talented, kind and humble. He restored my wife's smile in only three short visits. He cares for each person like they were family. I have been to Doctor Steven Brisman in Scarsdale New York who is the self proclaimed greatest dentist in the United States. Dr. Juan is as good or better. If anyone needs to hear more I will include my email. Trust me this MAN is the real deal. I will need more work soon and will fly 2,500 miles without and trouble to use his service again.

Small world! I used Juan Carlos Mejia for a regular exam and he is really a cool guy.
Not like your pompous "call me Dr." Dentists in the US.
He was "call me Juan Carlos". Spent time telling me what I needed to do. He does qualify as a "painless dentist" Had some peridontal work done at a fraction of what it cost in the US. Only very slight after treatment discomfort thanks to some good analgesics he gave me. I even went out and partied that night with no discomfort.
He is opening a new clinic with some partners on Las Palmas in the same building as Carulla.
I'll never go to another US dentist. Even with the co-pay the US dentist is more expensive.
This guy "Gets it" in dealing with Medellin visitors.

For dental Implants, cosmetic dentistry, crowns, inlays etc. He speaks English, spent time in USA as exchange student. Recognized as an expert in full mouth implantation. I have had extensive dentistry needs for most of my life and I can tell that not only is he a pleasant young dentist with an active practice, close to San Diego (El Poblado, Medellin) but the work I saw of his was exceptional.
There are great things going on in Colombia and these are some of the people doing more than just spouting off.

Until recently, I only needed normal and routine dental work. My last four visits to your office were especially satisfactory and as enjoyable as a visit to the dentist can be.
Your new office facility and assisting staff are just fabulous. You clearly spared no expense in designing the most modern dental office I have ever seen. The overall office environment is very inviting, bright and cheery with beautiful views from all the rooms.
