Pediatric dentist in Medellín

A pediatric dentist in El Poblado who speaks English to your child, not only to you. Saturday appointments, so nobody misses a school day.

This page is for families living in Medellín rather than for anyone flying in. If you have just moved here and you are trying to work out which pediatric dentist to take your children to, this is what we do and how it works.

A pediatric dentist who talks to your child

Plenty of clinics in Medellín will tell you they speak English. In practice that usually means the dentist explains things to the parent, in English, over the child’s head — while everything said to the child is in Spanish.

For a six-year-old who has been in the country three months, that is the whole problem. A child is not reassured by a conversation they cannot follow. They are reassured by being told, in their own language, what is about to happen and that they can stop at any time.

Dra. Laura Tamayo, our pediatric dentist, speaks English to both of you. That is the reason this page exists, and it is worth more than any equipment we could list.

A pediatric dentist is not a general dentist who is good with children. It is a separate postgraduate degree, taken after qualifying as a dentist, in treating people whose teeth, jaws and patience are all still developing.

Saturdays, so nobody misses school

Our pediatric dentist sees children on Saturday mornings. That is deliberate rather than a limitation of our timetable.

Pulling a child out of class for a dental appointment costs them a morning of school and costs you an argument. On a Saturday nobody is missing anything, the child is not already tired from a school day, and you are not watching the clock.

It does mean Saturdays fill up. If you need a particular week, write to us before that week rather than during it.

From the first tooth

A pediatric dentist sees children from babies onward, and so do we. A first visit that early is not really a treatment — it is a look, a conversation about feeding and brushing, and a chance for a child to be in a dental chair for the first time on a day when nothing hurts.

That last part matters more than it sounds. A child whose first visit to a dentist happens because something is already wrong learns that this is a place you go when you are in pain. It is a hard lesson to unteach.

If your child will not open their mouth

Sometimes they will not. It is not misbehaviour and it is not your fault.

Most of the time the answer is time: a shorter first appointment that achieves nothing clinically and everything else, then a second one. We would rather spend two visits earning a child’s cooperation than win one visit by force.

When that is genuinely not possible — a very young child, a long treatment, a child for whom the chair is unbearable — treatment can be done under sedation. Sedation here is administered by a specialised medical team that includes an anaesthetist, not by the dentist treating the teeth, and your child is monitored throughout.

Two people, and a monitor. One of them is watching your child rather than the teeth, for the whole appointment.

It is not a decision anybody takes lightly, and it is not something we suggest at a first appointment. If it comes up, it will be after we have tried the other way.

What a pediatric dentist costs

Every other treatment page on this site has its price on it, in pesos. This one does not, and we would rather explain that than leave a blank space.

Children are not small adults with smaller bills. What a three-year-old with early decay needs and what a ten-year-old with a loose crowded bite needs have almost nothing in common, and a price list that averaged them would mislead you in both directions.

So the figure comes after the first appointment: we look, we tell you what we think is going on, and you get the cost of the whole plan before anything is started. Nothing is treated on the day we first meet your child, unless they are in pain and it cannot wait.

What we can tell you is what walking in the door costs:

Prices are in Colombian pesos. We quote in pesos because the exchange rate moves — you can check today’s rate.

Later, when the teeth start moving

Most families who start here end up asking the orthodontic question a few years later. When that time comes it is the same clinic and the same records: clear aligners are treated from around nine years old, and whether your child is a candidate is decided from a scan and an examination rather than from how the teeth look in a photograph.

There is no hurry about that, and we will not manufacture one.

Booking a first visit with the pediatric dentist

Write to us on WhatsApp with your child’s age and what you are worried about, if anything. If it is just a check-up because you have moved and they are due one, say that — it is the most common first message we get from families here.

You can write in English or in Spanish. More about the clinic and the people in it.

Book it.

Write to us on WhatsApp and we will find you a time — this week if you live here, or around your dates if you are flying in. Someone at the clinic who speaks English answers, not a call centre.
